Downtown
Parsons Inc. is a community-wide effort to make Parsons a better
place to work and live by revitalizing its downtown. We are
a Main Street Program, which is a community self-help program
administered in Kansas by the Kansas
Department of Housing and Commerce. State staff supply technical
assistance, but the responsibility and credit for success rests
with the citizens and volunteers of Parsons.
In 1985, the National
Trust for Historic Preservation created the Main Street
Program as an integrated approach to stem the deterioration
of central business districts across the country. The Trust
understood that economic redevelopment was a complex process
that could not succeed using accepted urban renewal strategies.
A community's downtown can account for as much as 30% of a city's
jobs and 40% of its tax base. But it is more than an economic
asset. A prosperous, attractive downtown is at the very heart
of a community's quality of life. It is a visible barometer
of the town's economic well-being.
Downtown Parsons and its members focus time, expertise and enthusiasm
in four distinct areas. Utilizing
an eight-step process, we are
shaping the future of our community. |
